F
rank Lloyd Wright is generally regarded as one of the world’s great architects. His impact goes beyond the architectural world. By creating designs for furniture, textiles, flatware and more, he surrounded us with unique objects of beauty, making our lives richer and more meaningful. All of his designs served the bigger idea which was creating a new uniquely American architecture and ultimately a healthier democratic society. Throughout his 72 year career Wright pushed the limits of contemporary technology and challenged his clients to think “out of the box.”
The images presented in this exhibit are reproductions of original drawings, now part of the Frank Lloyd Wright archives in Taliesin, Arizona. The exhibit is displayed in the Elm and Walnut rooms from February 1 to 28, 2010.
This exhibit is a collaborative project between the West Lafayette Public Library and the John E. Christian Family Memorial Trust, Inc. The exhibit was created by John E. Christian, curator and Linda Eales, associate curator of the John E. Christian House (SAMARA) in West Lafayette, Indiana. Dr. Christian is an original client and owner of SAMARA a Usonian home designed by Wright in 1954 (S-375). After 51 years he continues to live in the home and manages the day to day operation of the property. The home has been open to the public for lectures, tours, demonstrations and discussions since 1988. Tours can be arranged by emailing samaratours@gmail.com or calling 765-409-5522.

Taking place mostly in the snow-covered Oslo night, O’Horten is a compelling & often comedic exploration of a loner who has had all familiarity stripped from his world and flounders in his attempts to find meaning in a life shorn of routine. Odd Horten, a freshly retired train driver, encounters a series of erratic characters and unexpected situations and is forced to reconsider his life. As in Kitchen Stories, Bent Hamer deftly balances the themes of loneliness, old age, and finding the courage to take chances.

Facing a water shortage and men too lazy to fix the rickety pipeline, the women of the village make a simple vow: “No water, no sex.” The gender lines are drawn, reinforced with barbed wire, and our young lovers find themselves on opposite sides of a fast-escalating feud.

Der blaue Engel (The Blue Angel, 1930)
Director: Josef von Sternberg
Derblaue Engel is a landmark in German film history, which brought German film into the international sound and motion picture industry, while launching the career of one of Germany’s most celebrated and controversial actresses. Based on the novel Professor Unrat (1905) by Heinrich Mann, Derblaue Engel tells the story of a man reduced to nothing through his obsession and jealousy over a woman called Lola Lola, played by the famous German-American actress Marlene Dietrich. Derblaue Engel can be read as an allegory for interwar Germany. It was produced during 1929 before the major shifts in German politics took place, but the timing of its release made it a politically poignant film for many audiences.(www.germanflicks.com)

His father is sick, so he must assume the lifestyle he thought he had shed-driving the family grocery cart from hamlet to hamlet, delivering supplies to the few remaining inhabitants. Accompanied by Claire, a friend from Paris whom he has a secret crush on, Antoine gradually warms up to his experience in the country and his encounters with the villagers, who initially seem stubborn and gruff, but ultimately prove to be funny and endearing. Ultimately, this surprise French box-office hit is about the coming-of-age of a man re-discovering life and love in the countryside. To make matters worse, she was wrongfully evicted, her husband has left her and she is struggling with addiction. The film shows two people whose views have become so myopic, they are unable to appreciate the others' dilemma.
Tuesday, August 25: Join us for the film version of our One Great Read! A witty tale of a young, educated girl coming of age in Iran, during the Islamic Revolution. This story highlights the differences between patriotism and fanaticism; idealism and hypocrisy and a people coming to grips with their own identity. The film version also includes part 2 of her story as she is sent off to Europe, to study. Alone, in the west, she is forced to confront prejudice and a longing to reunite with her people and country.

What is a Southern plantation? A relic of a bitter, divided past? A vanished realm of aristocratic charm and elegance? An impediment to the modern South's frenzied effort to turn itself into an anonymous landscape of superhighways and strip malls?
Or, perhaps, all of the above, plus something else as well: a site for understanding and reconciliation, a meeting place of past and present, black and white.
A place of home, family, enduring traditions…and new beginnings.
This strange, heartfelt documentary from film critic Godfrey Cheshire is a fascinating examination of his family roots, as well as an evocative meditation on the complexities of the South.
"Extraordinarily rich. Takes up the agonies and ironies of Southern history with remarkable empathy, wit and learning." -- A.O. Scott, New York Times

Otto Preminger directed this 1959 courtroom drama based on the best-selling novel written by Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker from a 1952 murder case in which he was the defense attorney. Jimmy Stewart stars as a small-town lawyer who defends an army officer (Ben Gazzara) accused of murdering the bartender who assaulted his wife (Lee Remick). The taut script, large performance by Stewart, and then-daring elements of the story challenged censorship laws at the time and make for possibly the finest trial movie ever made.

Our summer reading club is for children who are age 2 through those who have just completed grade 6. It is a “read-to-me” club, as well as a reading club, so all children are encouraged to join. Children receive a book bag, a reading record, and a book mark when they register for the club. They record the books they read or listen to during June and July and then bring their book lists to the children’s department of the library to collect their prizes. When children reach their final personal goals, they receive a certificate and a coupon for either a free kids’ meal at a local restaurant or a round of miniature golf or a game of bowling. They also may enter in our end of summer contest for an opportunity to win some great prizes. The prizes will be on display at the library after June 5.
The children’s department will also offer 11 special programs for children during June and July. Eight of them will be on Wednesdays and three will be on Saturdays. There will be posters about the events in the children’s area after June 1. Information about the programs will also be on the library web page about a week before every event. Starting June 1, 2009 the loan period for almost every item is 2 weeks. The change is being made to make it easier to use the West Lafayette Public Library - one loan period for just about everything on our shelves.
Books (new and older), magazines, videos, Books-on-CD, Books-on-tape,CDROMs, and music are all on the 2 week loan period with up to 2 renewals, as long as there are no holds on the item.
DVDs and console games are the exceptions. They are on the 1 week loan period with only 1 renewal, as long as there are no holds on the item.
We've increased the limits on the number of "Books on CD", ESL materials, and CD-ROMs all to 5 items of each type at one time. This change should also make it easier since almost all limited items are now limited to 5 items of each type at any one time. The only exception is console games which has a limit of 1 game per person. This is due to the small size of the collection. We are adding more games every month.
Items with the 5 item limit include:

Common as well as unusual scenes and
perspectives draw the interest of Tippecanoe County native and photographer,
Donald La Fon who's photographs are being exhibited in the Walnut and Elm rooms May 9 to 29, 2009.
Winner of several photo contests and awards, La Fon began using black and white film as a youth to capture the local natural beauty while hiking, biking, and floating on creeks and rivers throughout the county.
After being graduated from “Old Jeff”, La Fon worked at National Homes and learned to develop black and white film along with darkroom printing techniques from Purdue Prof. Vernon Cheek in evening classes in a Quonset hut where Armstrong Hall now sits.
La Fon continued his photographic education with Prof. Roger Ford, Vincennes University, and Prof. Will Counts, Indiana University. La Fon also attended Indiana State University and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. majoring in Journalism and History.
Following years of restaurant and sales management in southern Indiana La Fon returned to Tippecanoe County.
Although he still shoots black and white film La Fon primarily uses 35mm color films to portray a wide range of natural subjects and settings flavored with an occasional dash of wry whimsy.

2009 ONE GREAT READ BOOK CHOICE
Lafayette, IN – May 6, 2009 – Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi is the book countless people in two Indiana counties will read and discuss as part of the 2009 One Great Read program this summer.
“In slightly less than 160 pages, Persepolis combines words and pictures to tell the story a young woman’s life in Tehran from the 1970s to the 1980s,” said Tippecanoe County Public Library’s Chairperson Alison Moss. “It takes place as the Shah is overthrown and the Islamic Revolution begins, but the book’s themes are universal.”
One Great Read is a two-county, two-month series of activities. The selection and organizing committee includes representatives from the Tippecanoe County Public Library system, West Lafayette Public Library, Monticello-Union Township Library, Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette, Barnes and Noble Booksellers and local residents.
“Each year the committee uses just one book to generate eight weeks of programs, film showings, and book discussions for people of all ages and reading abilities,” said West Lafayette Public Library’s Chairperson Nancy Hartman.
The concept of a community-wide read began at the Library of Congress over a decade ago. Seattle was one of the first communities to sponsor a “read” and successfully featured Persepolis in 2003. In 2002, the Journal and Courier introduced the concept in Lafayette. In 2006, local libraries took over the activity and began sponsoring a variety of programs in partnership with local not-for-profit organizations.
Other books chosen for 2009 community reads in Indiana include Marley & Me by John Grogan (Clinton and Johnson Counties), On the Origin of the Species by Charles Darwin/ (Indiana University-South Bend), and Stealing Buddha’s Dinner by Bich Minh Nguyen (Purdue University’s Common Reading Project).
Local activities begin Wednesday, July 1 with a kick-off program at the West Lafayette Public Library. To find out more about Persepolis and a variety of 2009 One Great Read programs, visit libraries in Tippecanoe County and Monticello-Union Township; call 765-429-0100 or go to www.tcpl.lib.in.us
Sidebar of reviews:
“This is a graphic novel of immense power and importance for Westerners of all ages,” Booklist Review.
“Satrapi’s art is minimal and stark yet often charming and humorous as it depicts the madness around her,” Publishers Weekly Review.
“Satrapi never lapses into sensationalism or sentimentality. Skillfully presenting a child’s view of war and her own shifting ideals, she also shows quotidian life in Tehran and her family’s pride and love for their country despite the tumultuous times,” Library Journal Review.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas, Blindsight follows the gripping adventure of six Tibetan teenagers who set out to climb the 23,000 foot Lhakpa Ri on the north side of Mount Everest. A dangerous journey soon becomes a seemingly impossible challenge made all the more remarkable by the fact that the teenagers are blind. Believed by many Tibetans to be possessed by demons, the children are shunned by their parents, scorned by their villages and rejected by society. Rescued by Sabriye Tenberken -- a blind educator and adventurer who established the first school for the blind in Lhasa, the students invite the famous blind mountain climber Erik Weihenmayer to visit their school after learning about his conquest of Everest. Erik arrives in Lhasa and inspires Sabriye and her students Kyila, Sonam Bhumtso, Tashi, Gyenshen, Dachung and Tenzin to let him lead them higher than they have ever been before. The resulting 3-week journey is beyond anything any of them could have predicted.

Join the West Lafayette Public Library and WALLA on March 2, 2009, at 6:45 pm for a special showing of the movie The Visitor. Sixty-two-year-old college professor Walter Vale is sleepwalking through his life. Having lost his passion for teaching and writing, he fills the void by unsuccessfully trying to learn to play classical piano. When his college sends him to Manhattan to attend a conference, Walter is surprised to find a young couple has taken up residence in his apartment. Victims of a real estate scam, Tarek, a Syrian man, and Zainab, his Senegalese girlfriend, have nowhere else to go. In the first of a series of tests of the heart, Walter reluctantly allows the couple to stay with him. Touched by his kindness, Tarek, a talented musician, insists on teaching the aging academic to play the African drum. The instrument's exuberant rhythms revitalize Walter's faltering spirit and open his eyes to a vibrant world of local jazz clubs and Central Park drum circles. As the friendship between the two men deepens, the differences in culture, age and temperament fall away.

On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York's twin towers, then the world's tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released. Following six and a half years of dreaming of the towers, Petit spent eight months in New York City planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, Petit was faced with numerous extraordinary challenges: he had to find a way to bypass the WTC's security; smuggle the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan James Marsh's documentary brings Petit's extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of Philippe himself, and some of the people who helped him create the unique and magnificent spectacle that became known as the artistic crime of the century.

Suddenly his luck runs dry when arrested by Superintendent Friedrich Herzog. The team, which also includes detainee Adolf Burger, is given luxury barracks for their assistance. But while Salomon attempts to weaken the economy of Germany's allied opponents, Adolf refuses to use his skills for Nazi profit and would like to do something to stop Operation Bernhard's aid to the war effort. Mother and Daughter: a painter and a potter Roxie Hannemann and daughter, Miranda Hartman will exhibit their artwork at the West Lafayette Public Library October 4 through November 30. All paintings and ceramics are for sale, and 30% of the sales will help the library. Roxie's paintings will be in the Elm and Walnut Rooms. Miranda's ceramics will be on display on the first floor of the library.
Roxie has been a painter for over twenty years. Her paintings in this exhibit reflect an Oriental style. She likes doing long, flowing brushstrokes similar to the brush work in old Japanese and Chinese art. Her paintings are soothing and calm with nature's cool colors and other work is energetic and bold with warmer colors. Learn more at her art blog.
Miranda has been a ceramist for a little over three years. She enjoys working with clay because of the unique involvement that comes from creating a piece of pottery. Her inspiration is drawn from the organic lines found in nature. She enjoys the functionality of pottery and also the overwhelming desire that many people feel to touch and hold the art that has been created.

The Hoosier Salon legacy began in 1925 when the Daughters of Indiana opened the doors to the first exhibition at Marshall Fields and Company Galleries in Chicago. The high quality of art was applauded by critics and the public alike, the first exhibition included works by such notables as T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams and Will Vawter, and was an unqualified success. In 1942 the annual exhibit moved from Chicago to downtown Indianapolis and is annually housed at the Indiana State Museum. The Hoosier Salon galleries also host over thirty special shows each year.
After the annual exhibit is held at the Indiana State Museum, it is broken into several traveling exhibits and tours the state for several months. The West Lafayette Public Library is hosting one of these traveling exhibits. The exhibit opens on Monday September 22 and closes Friday October 17th at noon. The 14 pieces are on display around the library. We hope you will stop by and enjoy them. The unsold pieces are available for sale during the exhibit.

Despite the title, THE ITALIAN is a Russian film set at a bleak orphanage in rural Russia. The story opens when six-year-old Vanya Solntsev is introduced to an Italian couple who are hoping to adopt a child. Vanya is a handsome, bright-eyed little boy, and the couple takes an instant liking to him, agreeing to give him a home. The adoption by the Italians will take Vanya away from the miserable conditions of the orphanage, where the teenagers run a mini-Mafia, taking candy from the children and doling out beatings whenever anyone withholds money from them. Vanya is nervous, though accepting of his fate, until the mother of another orphan comes to reclaim her son, and she is told he has already been adopted. Vanya learns of this and is desperate to find out whether or not his own real mother is still out there. But the greedy adoption agent is determined to give Vanya to the Italians, who will pay her a generous sum for him. With the help of another orphan, Vanya makes his escape. He sets off for the address of the orphanage where his mother first left him, hoping to find some answers. While the plot of THE ITALIAN may be small-scale, it packs an enormous emotional punch, and Spiridonov's performance is heartbreaking in its realism.
All films are shown at 6:45 pm at the West Lafayette Public Library, discussion follows the film.

Join us on Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 4:30 pm for a special movie :: Goodbye Lenin!
How far can Alex Kerner (Daniel Bruhl) to to protect his mother from the truth about the collapse of her beloved East Germany? After falling into a coma shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, devoted socialist Christiane Kerner (played by Katrin Saß) awakens eight months later ‐ but with a weak heart that might not survive the shock of discovering that the German Democratic Republic no longer exists. Alex and his sister Ariane return the family’s apartment to the condition of an East German relic, replacing all their new Western décor with the considerably drabber furnishings from the GDR. This premise leads to both wacky and tragic results for the Kerner family, as the film movingly addresses the very real issue of Ostalgie, a post‐ Wall longing for the cultural icons, products, and social benefits of socialist East Germany. The box‐office hit Goodbye Lenin! is the recipient of numerous international film awards and was
nominated for a Golden Globe. Directed by Wolfgang Becker (Germany: 2003). 121 minutes.

The
Real Dirt on Farmer John is a documentary about John Peterson, a farmer, artist, and
eccentric/innovative thinker cast in rural Illinois. Filmmaker Taggart Siegel has
documented John’s struggle to redefine his family farm for over twenty years,
witnessing the colorful drama of John’s life. With the death of his father
during the late 60s, John turns his traditional family farm into an experiment
of art and culture, making it a haven for hippies, radicals and artists. The
end of this idealistic era is charted as the agricultural debt crisis of the
1980s brings about the tragic collapse of the farm. As the intricate weave of
rural America
unravels, vicious local rumors turn John into a scapegoat, condemning him as a
Satan-worshipping drug-dealer. Threatened with murder, his home burned to the
ground, John defies all odds to transform his land into a revolutionary farming
community. At the film’s close, the Peterson family farm is one of the largest
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)
farms in the United States.
Out of the ruins of single-crop agriculture, John creates an extended farm
village where people and art can thrive alongside agriculture.

The Art of Frank Lloyd Wright is on display now!
This exhibit can be viewed whenever the Library is open from July 1 to July 31, 2008. See also an exhibit of six Frank Lloyd Wright chairs and a scale model of the home.
The images presented in this exhibit are reproductions of original drawings, now part of the Frank Lloyd Wright archives in Taliesin, Arizona. According to Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, director of the Archives, the very fragile nature of these documents, rendered mostly with graphite and colored pencils on tracing paper, places them in extreme jeopardy if exhibited or referred to too often. These reproductions, published in limited edition, give us a rare opportunity to get a better sense of the complexity of Wright’s work.
The drawings are outstanding pieces of art and stand alone as a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright’s genius.
The exhibit is FREE and open to the public.

The West Lafayette Public Library will be hosting the photography of Alan McConnell in the Walnut & Elm Rooms from June 7 through June 26. Alan McConnell is a native of Indiana and became interested in photography while enrolled in a high school mini-course in the early 70’s. His first camera was a used manual Canon. Elaine, Alan’s wife for over 25 years, often accompanies him on photo excursions. Many of the photos will have scripts that she has written to contribute to the thought or mood at the scene. Alan enjoys using both color and black & white films. He finds black & white to be rather intriguing. Being able to create a powerful image with a range of tones and colors is a difficult challenge that he always attacks with a mentality that says, “It’s not done until it is perfect.”

On Monday, May 3, 2008 at 6:45pm, we will be showing the movie "In The Shadow Of The Moon." Between 1968 and 1972, nine American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon, and 12 men walked upon its surface. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON brings together surviving crew members (including Purdue's Neil Armstrong & Eugene Cernan) from every single Apollo mission that flew to the Moon, and allows them to tell their story in their own words. The riveting first-hand testimony is interwoven with visually stunning archival material re-mastered from original NASA film footage - much of it never used before. The result is an intimate epic that vividly communicates the daring, the danger, the pride, and the promise of this extraordinary era in history when the whole world literally looked up at America.

Some of the world's poorest people could increase their
supply of a food staple and improve their region's economic standing thanks to
a Purdue
University
research and extension education effort funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation. This 5-year, $11.4 million project was awarded to Purdue
University
in May 2007, following a competitive process.
Cowpea grain (also known as black-eyed peas) is very vulnerable to insect damage in storage. This damage reduces trade and food supply in West and Central Africa. Storage insecticides can protect grain, but they are either unavailable at the village level or when available they are misused by illiterate farmers, resulting in health problems. About 30% of West African cowpea farmers have tried hermetic storage, but they often fail to protect their cowpea because they either lack the air-tight containers or they do not understand the procedures. Hermetic storage in triple-layer plastic bags can provide an effective environment for storage of cowpeas without storage chemicals at an affordable cost to farmers in West and Central Africa. With a one-time cost estimated at a little more that $3 per household, farmers in West and Central Africa will learn how to better protect their cowpeas, and increase their household income on average about $150 per year. This five-year project will cover the countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Tchad, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo. Because of storage problems, farmers are often forced to sell their cowpeas at harvest, when prices are at their lowest levels. If we teach them how to store cowpeas properly, they will have more food security and can take advantage of selling their crop at higher prices later in the year.
Dr. Joan Fulton, Professor and Director of the Purdue Improved Cowpea Storage project will speak about this project on Monday, April 14, 2008 at 2:00 pm in the West Lafayette Public Library.
The talk is free and open to the public.
